Law On Peer Tutoring

The law on peer tutoring may vary from state to state and school to school. Peer tutoring is an elective for which students receive the applicable credits where students with no disabilities work with students who do have physical and/or mental disabilities. One benefit of this type of tutoring are the positive relationships and socialization between the students who do and do not have severe physical and/or learning disabilities. Both the student getting tutored and the student doing the tutoring can benefit from this kind of arrangement.

A peer tutor gets to learn about various types of disabilities and how individuals with disabilities can learn and grow. This is an excellent way to prepare for a career working with the disabled. The experience of being a peer tutor can teach a student tolerance, responsibility and the importance of setting a good example for other students. Exactly what a peer tutor will be asked to do will vary depending on the needs of the school and disabled student or students. The tutor may work in the classroom, cafeteria or even go on field trips with the disabled students.

One thing that distinguishes a peer tutor from a teacher is that above all, they are on the same level as the disabled student they are working with. They do not hold authority over the student or discipline them. Their number one goal is to help the disabled student fit in with the other non disabled students. Often, students with disabilities are overlooked by their peers or treated differently. Peer tutors can play a valuable part in helping other students recognize disabled students as their equals and include them in activities and events. This not only helps the disabled student but provides education to the students without disabilities.

To learn more about the law on peer tutoring in your school, speak to your guidance counselor or the individual in charge of special education. There are special classes required for peer tutors which may only have a limited number of openings. There will likely be academic requirements that a student must reach in order to be considered for a position in the peer tutoring program. Once you've completed the required classes you will be told what is expected of you as a peer tutor.
