Starting A Tutoring Program

Do you love to teach? Are you good with children? If the answer to these questions is yes, then starting a tutoring program may be the right thing for you. Tutors provide a very valuable service by helping students of all ages reach a higher level of academic success. The first thing you need to figure out is what you are qualified to teach. If you already have a teaching degree then this is probably not even a question. Many teachers work as tutors in their spare time, after they retire, during the summer or even when they have left teaching full time to raise their own young children. Of course you don't always have to be a teacher to be a tutor.
There may be a particular area or even more than one area where you feel confident. Some tutors specialize in one area while others offer more general services. For example, you may tutor in only one area, such as math or reading. Or, you may offer tutoring in every subject for children of a certain grade. For example, maybe you want to work with elementary school students. Or maybe you prefer helping high school students prepare for college. College preparation is a booming business as many parents want to give their children every advantage in this area.
Starting any kind of business requires time and effort. The first step is to choose the name of your business and get all the proper licenses as required by your locality. You may also want to hire an accountant and attorney to help you with tax and legal issues. Once your business is legally established, you need to find a way to bring in business. Advertising is very important to the success of any type of business, including a tutoring service. If you are on a budget you may want to start out with low cost methods such as newspaper ads and Internet postings. Craigslist is a free online classified ad site and very popular all over the country.
When starting a tutoring program there are many things to consider. In addition to the licensing and advertising, you will need to decide whether you want to provide tutoring at your home, the client's home, or both. There are even online tutors these days that do everything over the Internet. This may be an attractive option to you because you can provide your services to clients all over the country rather than in one local area. Combining online tutoring services with private in-home tutoring services may also be something you want to consider for your business.
